Finding a dress for an event can be tough, especially for those who are taller or shorter than average and on a college budget. In the Greek community there's always a formal or event going on, and sometimes at the last minute girls may be searching for dresses.

Two University of  Georgia alumnae founded Borrowed by Design, an online dress rental company that allows women to borrow dresses from other women as well as lend out dresses they can no longer wear.

“We put our heads together and came up with the idea of Borrowed by Design - being able to 'borrow' a dress from someone with our same size for a lot less than buying a new dress,” said Kat Ewing, UGA alumna and co-founder of Borrowed by Design.

The online company is barely a year old but is already growing in the community. To help spread the word about the company, Borrowed by Design is hosting a sorority philanthropy competetion. Whichever sorority has the most listings for dresses on the site by Sept. 30 will win $500 towards their philanthropy.

“We are however still in our growing stage and that is one reason we are enlisting help from UGA’s Greek community to get their dresses listed. And we are so excited about all the dresses soon to be hitting the site as well as to help support the philanthropy of the winning sorority,” said Carley Gainous a senior Advertising major who works as a Borrowed by Design intern.

Ewing and Jennifer Blueming founded Borrowed by Design after Ewing needed a dress but could not find one to accommodate her height at a decent price. Both graduates from the UGA Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, Ewing and Blueming wanted a way for people everywhere to get dresses they needed, without breaking the bank.

Borrowed by Design is unique in that it gives women an easy way to make some extra cash. It allows students to help others by renting their dresses to those who could not otherwise afford them.

Aside from providing women with these services, the Borrowed by Design team focuses on promoting positive body image in women.

“I love that we are able to be passionate about helping women find a way to pursue amazing fashion in an affordable way, and that we incorporate taking part in promoting a positive body image,” said Ashleigh Nicoletti a junior marketing and international business major who works as a campus representative for Borrowed by Design.

The company hopes to keep growing, using the Greek community as just a starting point, so that they can reach out to all women on campus.
